On Saturday August 31, 2013, Brooklyn Tech traveled to Woonsocket, Rhode Island to scrimmage the Woonsocket High School Villa Novans. The scrimmage was the culmination of nearly 3 years of preparation between Coach Carnell Henderson of Woonsocket and Coach McKenna of Tech.
Henderson and McKenna were teammates on the Boston University Football team. That team went from 2-7 in 1992 to 13-0 in 1993, winning a Yankee Conference Championship. The university dropped football in 1997 and there was no longer any football games for alumni to see each other and interact. Many of those players became football coaches, which meant their fall season’s further hindered get-togethers and reunions.
Henderson and McKenna thought it would be great if some of the alumni that coach football could put together scrimmages between the teams. The Adam J. Cirillo Association was able fund the trip through a grant this year the put the final touches on the event.
The team boarded buses at 8am on Saturday and drove through two states to reach Rhode Island. The scrimmage was competitive with the defenses getting the better of the offenses in the game situation work. The teams came together and had a BBQ at the end of the scrimmage. The team returned to Brooklyn later that night.
Breakfast and lunch was provided by Baker’s Dozen Bagels in Greenpoint, Brooklyn.
Dinner was provided by Buggin Out BBQ in Woonsocket.
